Japan and Bangladesh on Tuesday signed an agreement on the transfer of defence equipment and technology, establishing a legal framework for bilateral cooperation in the defence sector, said a press release.
The agreement was signed in Dhaka by Japanese
Ambassador to Bangladesh Saida Shinichi and Lieutenant General SM Kamrul
Hassan, principal staff officer of the Armed Forces Division under the Chief
Adviser’s Office.
The agreement came into effect on the same
day.
According to the press release issued by
Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the agreement sets out procedures and
rules governing the handling, use and transfer of defence equipment and
technology between the two governments. It will apply to jointly determined
projects, including those contributing to international peace and security.
The framework also includes provisions to
ensure strict control over transferred defence equipment and technology,
particularly to prevent unauthorised third-party transfers or use beyond agreed
purposes.
The Japanese government said the agreement is
expected to strengthen defence cooperation between the two countries while
supporting the maintenance and enhancement of Japan’s defence production and
technological base, thereby contributing to Japan’s security.
