A writ petition has been filed challenging the legality of Dr MA Qaiyum’s candidacy, the BNP-nominated contender for the Dhaka-11 constituency, on allegations of dual citizenship and concealment of information.
The writ was filed on Monday by Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and a candidate of the 11-party alliance in the Dhaka-11 seat.
The petition seeks a High Court order suspending Dr Qaiyum’s candidacy in the constituency.
Appearing on behalf of Nahid Islam are advocates Zahirlul Islam Musa and Ali Azgar Sharifi.
Advocate Zahirlul Islam Musa said the writ petition is expected to be heard by the High Court later this week.
Earlier, the Election Commission declared the nomination papers of both Nahid Islam, candidate of the 11-party alliance and NCP convener, and Dr MA Qaiyum, the BNP nominee and the party’s assistant secretary for microcredit affairs, to be valid.
