Students from seven Dhaka-based public colleges on Thursday
afternoon warned they would march to the Chief Adviser’s Residence, State
Guesthouse Jamuna, if the government fails to issue an ordinance on
establishing a dedicated university for them.
Dhaka College student Ziaur Rahman issued the threat around
2pm during a road blockade enforced by the students at the Science Lab
Intersection.
He alleged that the government has “betrayed” them by not issuing the ordinance on establishing the “Dhaka Central University” in the first half of January.
A parallel blockade was enforced at the Technical intersection by a group of students from Mirpur Bangla College.
The “March to Jamuna” was announced after numerous online media
reports pointed at growing public anger at the road blockades.
Amid the college students’ blockade, a number of critically ill
patients and emergency travelers were forced into long-distance walk as
vehicles could not ply the roads.
They told journalists from different media houses that the
movement for securing selfish interest by holding people hostage must come to
an end.
They rebuked the students for the “inhumane blockade” and
urged them to take the movement to the concerned ministry's office.
