A gas pipeline accident has occurred once again in Dhaka, marking the third such incident within two weeks, further disrupting gas supply in the capital.
This time, a valve on an industrial customer’s
service line burst near the Uttara–Tongi Bridge, causing a high-pressure gas
leak.
In response, gas supply through Uttara’s main
pipeline has been shut down immediately.
The information was confirmed in a press release
issued on Tuesday night by Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution PLC, the
company responsible for gas distribution in Dhaka and surrounding districts.
According to the statement, the leakage forced Titas
to shut down the main 12-inch-diameter gas distribution pipeline in Uttara. As
a result, gas supply has been suspended across Uttara, Uttarkhan, Dakshinkhan,
and adjacent areas.
Work is currently underway to replace the damaged
valve.
The valve is used to regulate gas flow by increasing
or reducing pressure and is installed at various points along the pipeline.
Titas Gas authorities expressed sincere apologies to
customers for the temporary inconvenience.
The incident comes amid an ongoing LPG gas supply
crisis in Dhaka over the past month, during which LPG has been scarce even at
double the usual price.
At the same time, repeated accidents in the pipeline
gas network have continued to disrupt supply.
On 4 January, a pipeline beneath the Turag River
developed a leak, which continues to affect gas supply in areas such as Mirpur
and Mohammadpur.
Subsequently, on 10 January, a valve burst in front
of the Ganabhaban, cutting off gas supply and causing significant inconvenience
to consumers.
Gas supply was restored later that night after a new
valve was installed.
