Mahdi Hasan, member secretary of Students Against Discrimination’s (SAD) Habiganj unit, was granted bail on Sunday, a day after he was arrested over his controversial remarks during a confrontation with the officer-in-charge of Shayestaganj Police Station.
General Register Officer Tajul Islam confirmed the bail, while Mahdi’s lawyer, MA Majid, said the order was passed by Abdul Mannan of Senior Judicial Magistrate Court-3.
Habiganj Court Inspector Aminul Islam said Mahdi was produced in connection with a case filed by Shayestaganj Police Station. He has been accused of obstructing government duties and behaving in an inappropriate and confrontational manner towards police officers.
Earlier, after Mahdi’s detention, over a hundred SAD activists staged a sit-in outside Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station from 7:30pm on Thursday night until 8:00am today. They demanded the convening of a night court to hear his bail application.
Earlier on Thursday midnight, Enamul Hasan Nayan, vice-president of Shayestaganj Sadar Union Chhatra League, was arrested for alleged links to a banned organisation.
