The Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) has expressed profound sorrow at the death of Begum Khaleda Zia, a three-time former Prime Minister, Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), and a towering figure of the country’s democratic movement.

In a condolence message on Tuesday, DCAB said Begum Khaleda Zia’s historic role in the struggle to establish democracy, uphold a multiparty political culture and safeguard the rights of the people of Bangladesh would be remembered with deep respect and gratitude.

The association noted that through her uncompromising leadership, the nation was repeatedly steered away from undemocratic rule at critical junctures in its history.

DCAB said the country would forever honour her significant contributions to Bangladesh and its democratic institutions, describing her as a symbol of resilience and principled political leadership.

Extending heartfelt sympathy, the association conveyed its deepest condolences to her bereaved family members, relatives and well-wishers, and prayed for strength and solace for them at this time of profound grief.

“With her passing, an era of strong, female-led political leadership in Bangladesh draws to a close,” the statement said, adding, “May her soul rest in eternal peace.”
