The witness testimony phase in the case concerning the killing of a cat belonging to a man named Monsur in the capital’s Mohammadpur area has concluded, with Ejaz Hossain Marwan testifying before a Dhaka court on Tuesday.
Dhaka
Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ashraful Haque recorded the testimony and set 12
January for the accused to present his defence.
Confirming
the development, the plaintiff’s lawyer, Advocate Jakir Hossain, said that the
next hearing is scheduled for 12 January for defence arguments.
According
to the case documents, a cat belonging to Monsur went missing on 1 February from
his residence in Mohammadpur.
CCTV
footage later revealed that a man named Akbar Hossain Shiblu had kicked the cat
repeatedly “like a football.”
Even
after the cat lay motionless, the accused allegedly continued to press down on
it with his foot, ensuring its death.
Nafisa
Nowreen Chowdhury, on behalf of Peoples for Animal Welfare, filed a case
regarding the incident with the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court on 5 February.
The
court recorded the plaintiff’s statement and directed Mohammadpur Police
Station to investigate the allegations.
Subsequently,
on 14 July, the court framed charges and ordered the trial to begin, as the
allegations against Akbar Hossain were found to be primarily true.
