The full text of the verdict that sentenced deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death for committing crimes against humanity during the July-August 2024 mass uprising has been published.
On Wednesday, the three-judge International
Crimes Tribunal-1 published the verdict after it was signed by Justice Md Golam
Mortuza Mozumder, who chaired the tribunal, and Justice Md Shofiul Alam Mahmood
and retired district judge Mohammad Mohitul Hoque Anam Chawdhury.
On 17 November, the tribunal delivered
the judgement, handing down five years’
imprisonment to former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun,
who turned state evidence in the case.
The tribunal also
ordered the confiscation of all properties belonging to Hasina and Kamal, who were
tried in absentia. However, Mamun heard the verdict from the dock.
With the publishing
of the judgement on Wednesday, the convicts must
file their appeals within the next 30 days.
In its verdict, the ICT said the
charges of crimes against humanity brought against the trio in the lawsuit have
been proved.
The tribunal said Sheikh Hasina
exercised superior command responsibility by ordering the use of drones,
helicopters, and lethal weapons during last year’s movement. The former home
minister and the former police chief carried out the orders, while Hasina
issued these directives to them.
