Three Bangladeshi nationals have reportedly been beaten to death by local residents in the Indian state of Tripura. The incident was confirmed by the media cell of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Habiganj Battalion (55 BGB) around midnight on Wednesday (15 October).

According to preliminary information, the victims were residents of the Sonachang Bazar area in Chunarughat upazila of Habiganj district. However, their exact identities and addresses are yet to be confirmed.

Lieutenant Colonel Tanzilur Rahman, commanding officer of the 55 BGB Battalion, said that the names and details of the deceased would be shared once verified.

The BGB stated that two to three days ago, three Bangladeshi citizens had reportedly crossed the border through the Vidyabil area of Srimangal upazila and entered the Karengichhara area under Khowai police station in Tripura. The location is four to five kilometres inside India from the zero line and falls under the jurisdiction of the 70th Battalion of the Indian Border Security Force (BSF).

After entering Indian territory, the three men were attacked by local residents who suspected them of being cattle thieves.

All three were killed on the spot. Their bodies are currently being held at Shampahar police station in India.

The BGB has contacted the BSF and is continuing efforts to verify the details and authenticity of the incident, as well as to gather further information.
