The Election Commission (EC) on Monday published a gazette declaring National Citizen Party (NCP) Joint Convener Nusrat Tabassum, a candidate of the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance, elected unopposed as a member of parliament (MP) from a reserved women’s seat.
EC Public Relations Director Md Ruhul Amin Mallick confirmed the development on Tuesday.
Returning Officer and EC Joint Secretary Md Moin Uddin Khan said, “We declared her elected unopposed on Sunday (4 April).
The gazette was published in her name on Monday night.”
With the publication of the gazette, Nusrat is now eligible to take oath and assume office.
Earlier, on 21 April, Nusrat submitted her nomination at 4:19pm, 19 minutes past the deadline, which the returning officer initially refused to accept.
She later moved the court, which directed the EC to accept the nomination. Following the order, the commission accepted, scrutinised, and validated her nomination.
Meanwhile, fellow NCP Joint Convener Monira Sharmin filed a writ petition and wrote to the EC requesting that Nusrat’s name not be gazetted until the High Court ruled on her petition seeking reinstatement.
Sharmin had been disqualified during scrutiny for not completing three years since retirement from government service. However, a High Court bench on Monday declined to hear her writ challenging the cancellation of her candidacy.
