The deceased has been identified as Ali Hossain, 49, a resident of Dhobolghuri (East Paniyartari) village in Sarkarhat union.
The incident occurred near sub-pillar No 5 of the main border pillar No 874 at Dhabolguri, about 500 yards inside Indian territory, a Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) press release said.
It said gunfire was heard in two separate rounds at around 2:50pm on Tuesday and later at 4:50am on Wednesday.
In response to the gunfire, BGB contacted the BSF by phone at around 6:35am and was informed that seven to eight Bangladeshi nationals had crossed into Indian territory at dawn, allegedly attempting to cut barbed wire.
The BSF allegedly fired warning shots, which led to a scuffle and physical confrontation. During the incident, Ali Hossain was shot, the release added.
The BSF took him to a nearby hospital in India, where doctors declared him dead.
