The Election Commission (EC) on Monday officially announced that voting for the 50 reserved women’s seats in the parliament will be held on 12 May.
Speaking to reporters at Nirbachan Bhaban, EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said that the formal schedule for the seats will be unveiled on 8 April.
According to existing law, reserved women’s seats in parliament are allocated in proportion to the number of seats political parties secured in the 300 general constituencies.
Based on the 13th parliamentary election result,
the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led alliance is expected to get 36 seats, the Jamaat-led alliance 13, and the independents' block 1.
As only elected members of parliament serve as voters in this election and candidates are nominated by political parties, they are often elected unopposed.
In parallel, the Election Commission has scheduled by-elections for the Sherpur-3 and Bogura-6 constituencies to be held on 9 April.
