Dhora Toru Kabyo explores humanity’s bond with nature

“Dhora Toru Kabyo” (Nature’s Tale), a dance production inspired by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s poem “Brikkhobandana” , will be staged  at Chhayanaut Auditorium in the capital’s Dhanmondi today. The event is jointly organised by the High Commission of India in Dhaka, the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC), and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Dhaka.
Produced and performed by Turongomi Repertory Dance Theatre, the concept, dance-theatre adaptation and direction of “Dhora Toru Kabyo” are by Pooja Sengupta.
The dance theatre piece explores the profound and sensitive relationship between humanity and nature. Through the personification of the Earth (Dhora) and the Tree (Toru), this dance drama honours the cycle of seasons and the grandeur of Mother Earth’s contribution and sacrifice.
The production begins with an evocative portrayal of nature’s beauty, featuring trees, vines, flowers, fruits, rivers and the wind. Through a fusion of classical and contemporary dance movements, the performers bring the natural world to life through physical gestures, melody and rhythm.
At the heart of the production is the spiritual bond between human beings and nature. As the narrative progresses, however, this harmony is disrupted by human greed and recklessness. A pivotal section symbolically portrays the devastation inflicted on the natural world, creating a powerful sense of conflict and catastrophe.
