Tagore University of Creative Arts (TUCA) has inaugurated a “Nazrul Corner” at its National Professor Anisuzzaman–Writer Begum Rabeya Khatun Central Library to mark the 50th death anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, and the Nazrul Year.

The corner has been established to provide students, faculty members and researchers with greater opportunities to read, study and engage with Nazrul’s literature, music, philosophy and creative legacy.

The inauguration programme was attended by renowned Nazrul Sangeet exponent Ferdous Ara, University of Dhaka’s retired faculty members Professor Rahmat Ali and Professor Wahida Mallik Jolly, Ashirbad Chalachitra Founder Habibur Rahman Khan and Lieutenant General Chowdhury Hasan Sarwardi (retd).

Shornokishore Network Foundation (SKNF) Founder Farzana Rashid Brownia, academic and researcher Mushtaq Ibn Ayub, and television presenter Dipty Chowdhury were also present.

Robin Khan, chairman of the Board of Trustees of TUCA, chaired the programme.

Following the inauguration, the university organised “Srijone Nazrul,” a discussion and cultural programme celebrating the creative and intellectual legacy of the National Poet, on Monday night.

Students from the departments of Theatre, Music, Dance and Fashion Design participated in the cultural programme, presenting theatrical performances, solo and group songs, dances and a fashion show.

Speakers at the discussion highlighted the contemporary relevance of Nazrul’s ideals of equality, humanity, freedom of thought and secularism. They stressed the need to preserve his legacy through reading, research and cultural practices rather than limiting it to commemorative occasions.

Speaking on the occasion, Robin Khan said the Nazrul Corner would provide students with an opportunity to engage more deeply with Nazrul’s literature, music, philosophy and humanistic ideals.

“It will also help bring Nazrul’s legacy of humanism and free thought into meaningful conversation with a new generation within an environment of creative education,” he said.

Professor Dr Md Rafiul Islam, honorary academic adviser to TUCA and chairman of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Dhaka; TUCA Registrar Md Monirul Islam; heads of academic departments; faculty members; students; and senior officials were also present.
