Nurunnahar Nimni has become the third Bangladeshi woman and the eighth Bangladeshi overall to conquer Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak.
She reached the summit at 5:24am Nepal time on Wednesday and hoisted the Bangladesh flag atop Mount Everest, according to the Bangla Mountaineering and Trekking Club.
Nimni achieved the feat 14 years after Nishat Majumder became the first Bangladeshi woman to scale Everest on 19 May 2012. Wasfia Nazreen reached the summit on 26 May of the same year.
Nimni travelled to Nepal on 11 April and reached Everest Base Camp through Kathmandu and Lukla.
She left the base camp on 17 May for her summit attempt and gradually advanced through the climbing camps, reaching Camp 4 on 23 May.
She initially started her final ascent that day but returned due to unfavourable weather conditions.
Nimni later stayed at Camp 2 for several days while waiting for weather conditions to improve.
After receiving a favourable forecast on 25 May, she resumed the expedition and returned to Camp 4 on Monday.
She began the final push towards the summit in the evening and successfully reached the top of Everest early Tuesday with support from a Sherpa guide from Nepal-based Eight K Expeditions.
Nimni currently works as a principal officer in the general banking division of Pubali Bank PLC, which also sponsored her expedition.
Raised in Rangpur, she studied geology at the University of Dhaka before pursuing mountaineering.
