Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday conducted surprise inspections at 13 locations across the capital, including hospitals, educational institutions, government residential quarters and a hawker-free footpath, to assess cleanliness and public service management.

During the four-and-a-half-hour tour, from 9:10am to 1:40pm, he expressed dissatisfaction with poor hygiene and maintenance at several sites, directing hospital authorities to improve conditions within seven days and officials responsible for residential quarters to act within two weeks.

The prime minister began his tour at Kuwait-Bangladesh Friendship Government Hospital in Uttara. He then visited Rajuk Uttara Model College, Mirpur Cantonment Public School and College, the National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh, Paikpara Staff Quarters, Government Bangla College, Bangladesh Shishu Hospital and Institute, and Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital in Agargaon.

He also visited his former educational institution, Dhaka Residential Model College in Mohammadpur, where he briefly addressed students and teachers and recalled his time there.

Other stops included Dhanmondi Government Boys’ High School, Kalabagan Staff Quarters, Azimpur Government Officers and Employees’ Residential Quarters, and a hawker-free footpath in Mirpur-10.

During the visits, Tarique Rahman spoke with officials, students, patients, residents and pedestrians about conditions at the establishments. He urged them to help make the government’s cleanliness drive successful.

PM gives Uttara hospital seven days to improve hygiene

At Kuwait-Bangladesh Friendship Government Hospital in Uttara, the prime minister spoke with patients about the medical care they were receiving and inspected several departments, including the intensive care unit (ICU) and operating theatres.

He expressed dissatisfaction with the hospital’s management and cleanliness, giving the authorities seven days to improve hygiene and the overall environment amid concerns over dengue.

PM urges students to fight dengue and keep Dhaka clean

During his visit to Rajuk Uttara Model College, the prime minister urged students to keep their homes, schools and neighbourhoods clean to prevent dengue and protect the environment.

He said government efforts alone could not ensure a clean and liveable Dhaka.

Dengue cases rise every year during this period, often continuing through November, claiming many lives, he said.

“Prevention is the best way to fight dengue. And for that, we must keep our surroundings clean. I want your help in this effort,” he told the students.

Saying Dhaka is home to an estimated two to two-and-a-half crore people, he noted that the cleaning staff of the two city corporations could not maintain the entire city on their own despite their regular efforts.

All residents must therefore take responsibility for keeping public spaces clean, he said.

He urged students to discourage littering and raise awareness against dumping waste outside designated areas. He also expressed concern over the theft of dustbins installed across the capital and saplings planted by the city corporations, calling for greater public responsibility to protect public property.

The prime minister encouraged students to plant at least one tree on their own birthdays and those of family members.

Recalling Dhaka’s former green spaces, he said the loss of trees and open areas had contributed to rising temperatures.

“The more trees we have, the more freely we will be able to breathe,” he said, urging young people to play an active role in cleanliness, dengue prevention and tree plantation.

PM calls on Government Bangla College students to lead cleanliness drives

During a visit to Government Bangla College in Mirpur, Tarique Rahman urged young people to help prevent dengue, protect the environment and build a clean, green and healthy country.

Speaking to members of the Bangladesh National Cadet Corps (BNCC) and Scouts, he said collective efforts were essential to safeguarding future generations. Keeping a densely populated city like Dhaka clean was challenging but achievable through joint efforts and public awareness, he added.

He urged young people to maintain cleanliness at home, in educational institutions and at workplaces, discourage littering and prevent water from accumulating in places where mosquitoes could breed.

A clean environment was essential to protecting public health and reducing the burden on the healthcare system, he said.

The prime minister also called for more tree planting to combat air pollution, citing Dhaka’s poor air quality. He encouraged students to build on earlier tree-planting efforts and help make the country greener.

“Your generation will lead this country in the future,” he said, urging them to work towards a cleaner and healthier Bangladesh.

PM visits alma mater, urges students to keep country clean and green

At Dhaka Residential Model College in Mohammadpur, the prime minister urged students to help rebuild the country by keeping their surroundings clean and planting more trees.

Addressing the students, he said the government alone could not ensure a clean and green country, stressing the need for young people to take responsibility for their homes, educational institutions and neighbourhoods.

Referring to the 2024 mass uprising, he said young people had demonstrated their ability to bring significant change through collective action. Their responsibility did not end with the movement, as they also had a role in rebuilding the nation, he added.

Expressing concern over Dhaka’s worsening air pollution and its health risks, particularly for children, he called for increased tree planting.

“You are the future of the days to come. I have two requests—keep the country clean and plant more trees,” he told the students.

PM orders action against doctor caught smoking in office

The prime minister ordered action against a physician caught smoking in his office during a surprise inspection of Bangladesh Shishu Hospital and Institute in Agargaon. He expressed dissatisfaction with the doctor’s conduct and the untidy condition of his room.

During the visit, he inspected several departments and reviewed the hospital’s working environment and overall cleanliness.

He directed the hospital’s board chairman, Prof Dr AKM Azizul Haque, to take action against Associate Professor Dr Rafiqul Islam, who was subsequently suspended temporarily.
