State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam on Monday called for stronger cooperation between Bangladesh and Algeria in energy, fertiliser, trade and other sectors to strengthen bilateral relations and ensure long-term energy and food security.
She made the call when Algerian Ambassador to Bangladesh Abdelouahab Saidani paid a courtesy call on her at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka on 12 October.
The meeting reaffirmed the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the two countries, founded on mutual respect, fraternal solidarity and shared development aspirations.
During the meeting, Shama Obaed Islam emphasised the need to enhance collaboration in the energy sector to ensure Bangladesh’s long-term energy security.
Both sides discussed a wide range of issues, including trade, investment, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, climate change, sports, culture and people-to-people contacts.
The state minister also stressed the importance of cooperation in the fertiliser sector to ensure food security. Noting that both countries were vulnerable to the adverse impacts of global warming, she underscored the need for joint efforts to address climate challenges.
She encouraged Algeria to import more environmentally friendly jute and jute goods from Bangladesh and highlighted the importance of deepening bilateral cooperation in sports and culture.
Ambassador Saidani reiterated Algeria’s interest in strengthening cooperation with Bangladesh in energy, pharmaceuticals, shipbuilding, sports and culture. He also emphasised the importance of high-level visits to further consolidate the friendly relations between the two countries.
