The body of Mosammat Mariam Khatun, 19, the second wife of Satkhira-4 MP and expelled Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader Gazi Nazrul Islam, was recovered from a flat at the capital’s NAM Bhaban in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Sunday evening.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Gulshan Zone Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Aminul Haque Bappi confirmed the matter to the Daily Sun, stating that officers discovered the body hanging inside the apartment after being alerted at around 5:30pm.
“Forensic experts from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and a team from the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) were called to the scene,” he said, adding that the death is suspected to have occurred between 3:00pm and 3:30pm.
Duty officer Sub-Inspector Anowar Hossain of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station said no other occupants were initially found in the residence.
Later, Nazrul and his first wife were taken into police custody for interrogation, DMP Tejgaon Zone DC Ibne Mizan said at a press conference around 10pm.
The body was recovered from Flat 203 on the second floor of Building 5 at the lawmaker residential complex.
While Mariam was found hanging by the neck, police emphasised that the precise cause of death has yet to be determined, pending a full investigation.
The tragic discovery comes two months after a video allegedly depicting Gazi Nazrul in an intimate moment with a woman – later identified as Mariam – went viral on social media on 20 July, provoking widespread public scrutiny.
At the time, the former MP refuted the online backlash, claiming the video was part of a “false and motivated” smear campaign.
He asserted that Mariam was his lawfully wedded second wife and that they had married on 17 June in a family ceremony conducted with his first wife’s consent.
However, discrepancies emerged after marriage registrar Badrul Alam Md Baki Billah confirmed that the marriage was registered on 19 July, rather than 17 June.
Furthermore, a CV belonging to Mariam surfaced around the same period, featuring a glowing employment recommendation signed by the three-time MP on 22 June, in which her marital status was still listed as “unmarried”.
Following the scandal, Jamaat-e-Islami expelled Gazi Nazrul from the party on 22 July, subsequently notifying both the parliament speaker and the chief election commissioner. The party stated that an internal probe into media reports had substantiated allegations of “moral misconduct”.
In a related development, Gazi Nazrul’s driver, Obaidur Rahman, lodged a case with Pallabi police station on 21 July, alleging he was assaulted and choked after raising objections over the extramarital affair and being wrongfully accused of leaking the viral footage.
