A crude bomb exploded in front of the Supreme Court in the capital shortly after the International Crimes Tribunal-2 sentenced seven Awami League leaders, including its General Secretary Obaidul Quader, to death for crimes against humanity during the July uprising.
The incident took place around 1:20pm on Tuesday, Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Moniruzzaman confirmed.
He said that two people arrived on a motorcycle and threw the crude bomb onto the road in front of the Supreme Court’s main gate before fleeing the scene. Later, the crude bomb exploded.
Members of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP)’s Bomb Disposal Unit visited the spot and collected evidence. Police are trying to identify the two suspects by examining CCTV footage, he added.
Following the incident, Shahbagh police conducted strict searches in Shahbagh and nearby areas, while people were checked at police checkpoints.
Earlier in the day, a three-member bench of International Crimes Tribunal-2, headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, sentenced seven leaders of the Awami League, whose activities are currently banned, and its affiliated organisations to death in a case filed over crimes against humanity during the July uprising.
The convicts are Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Jubo League President Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, its General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, and banned Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain and General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Enan. All seven convicts are currently absconding, according to the case proceedings.
The tribunal concluded hearing arguments in the case on 18 August and kept it pending for a verdict. It later fixed 15 September for delivering the judgment.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said, “This reaction came after the verdict against fascism and those who opposed fascism. A crude bomb exploded in reaction to the death sentences of seven people. It is not a major issue.”
While answering reporters’ questions after a meeting at the Secretariat on Tuesday, he said, “The two people who carried out the explosion have been identified through CCTV footage. They could be criminals linked to the Awami League. The government is investigating the matter.”
