Bashundhara Kings have successfully reclaimed the Bangladesh Football League throne, securing their sixth league title with a game to spare following a clinical 2-0 victory over arch-rivals Abahani Limited in Cumilla on Friday afternoon.
The highly anticipated “winner-takes-all” showdown at the Bhasha Shoinik Shaheed Dhirendranath Datta Stadium proved to be a tale of two halves, requiring a blistering second-half surge from the Kings to dismantle a resolute Abahani side and firmly extinguish the Sky Blues’ title ambitions.
The opening 45 minutes yielded a goalless, closely fought affair as both heavyweights went toe-to-toe in a fiercely contested battle.
Neither side were willing to blink first, neutralising each other across the pitch and leaving the destiny of the championship hanging delicately in the balance at the interval.
Following the restart, the momentum shifted palpably.
Desperate to secure the title and avoid a frantic final-day shootout, the Kings noticeably upped the tempo.
A golden opportunity arrived shortly after the break when Brazilian talisman Dorielton Gomes threaded a brilliant pass to an unmarked Mohammad Hridoy.
The midfielder unleashed a powerful strike, only to be denied by a crucial, last-ditch block from Abahani centre-back Yasin Khan.
Just as the match appeared to be settling into a measured rhythm, the decisive breakthrough arrived in the 73rd minute.
Dorielton, orchestrating the attack with superb vision, delivered an astute pass to Foysal Ahmed Fahim.
As Foysal burst into the penalty area, he was clumsily brought down by an Abahani defender, prompting the referee to point straight to the spot.
Dorielton stepped up and coolly dispatched the resulting penalty, breaking the deadlock and seizing control of the title race.
A mere three minutes later, the Kings effectively killed the contest and sealed their coronation.
Lurking on the edge of the penalty area, Sohel Rana unleashed a sublime, curling effort that arrowed toward the goal.
Despite a desperate, full-stretch dive from Abahani goalkeeper Mitul Marma, the strike nestled beautifully into the back of the net, sparking jubilant celebrations from the Kings’ camp.
The rapid-fire double completely deflated Abahani, and Bashundhara comfortably managed the remainder of the match.
The final whistle confirmed the 2-0 victory, officially crowning Kings as the 2025-26 champions.
With an unassailable lead heading into the final matchday, their upcoming clash against Fakirerpool Young Men’s Club will now serve as a triumphant victory lap for the undisputed kings of Bangladesh football.
