Amid changes in key state institutions following the formation of the new government, the chairman and two commissioners of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) have now resigned.
ACC Chairman Mohammad Abdul Momen and Commissioners Mian Mohammad Ali Akbar Azizi and Hafiz Ahsan Farid met the cabinet secretary at the Secretariat on Tuesday, where their resignations were submitted.
Speaking to reporters after stepping down, Azizi said he resigned for “personal reasons,” adding that the commission had worked diligently over the past 15 months and performed better than previous commissions.
While talking to reporters at the ACC headquarters in the afternoon, ACC Chairman Momen said all three members resigned voluntarily following the change in government.
“A new government has come with its own expectations. It will certainly form a more qualified commission to meet those expectations,” he said, adding that they had tried to carry out their responsibilities to the best of their ability since taking charge in December 2024.
Asked whether the resignation was sending any political message, Momen said, “A new government has come, they have a manifesto, they have expectations. The government will act according to its decisions. I do not see anything different there.”
Two other members of the commission were also present at the time.
The commission resigned on the 14th day after the elected government assumed office, ending nearly 15 months in charge.
In recent days, speculation had been growing over the future of the commission. Their resignation comes amid criticism that, despite filing cases against around 200 former ministers, MPs, bureaucrats and businesspeople linked to the Awami League, including members of Sheikh Hasina’s family, the ACC failed to make significant progress in probing major corruption allegations from the previous regime.
There were also allegations of irregularities in internal promotions, transfers and investigations within the ACC during their tenure. However, the outgoing chairman maintained that the commission’s overall performance was successful.
