A Dhaka court on Monday sentenced ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana’s two daughters Tulip Siddiq and Azmina Siddiq, and son Radwan Mujib Siddiq Bobby to varying jail terms over irregularities in the allocation of plots under the RAJUK Purbachal New Town Project.
Judge Robiul Alam of Dhaka Special Judge Court-4 delivered the verdicts in two cases related to the plot scam.
With this, the former prime minister, who fled the country on 5 August 2024 in the face of a mass upsurge, faces 36 years’ imprisonment in six cases related to the plot irregularities.
In one of the two cases concerning the allocation of a plot to Azmina, the court sentenced Azmina to seven years’ imprisonment, Hasina to five years, and Tulip to two years.
In the other case, involving the allocation of a plot to Bobby, the court handed down seven years’ imprisonment to Bobby, five years to Hasina, and two years to Tulip.
Apart from Hasina and her three family members, the court jailed 11 other accused for 10 years and another – former Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) member Khurshid Alam, the only accused currently in custody – for two years in the two cases.
Those who got 10 years’ imprisonment are former state minister for housing and public works Sharif Ahmed, former Prime Minister’s Office secretaries Mohammad Salahuddin and Kazi Washi Uddin, former administrative officer of the ministry Saiful Islam Sarkar, former senior assistant secretary Purabi Goldar, former RAJUK chairman Anisur Rahman Miah, former members Tanmoy Das, Mohammad Nasir Uddin, and Shamsuddin Ahmad Chowdhury, former deputy director Nayeb Ali Sharif and former assistant director Mazharul Islam.
Besides, former secretary Shahid Ullah Khandaker, former RAJUK director Sheikh Shahinul Islam and former assistant director Faria Sultana were sentenced to five years’ imprisonment each in the case involving Bobby.
In the case involving Azmina, former additional secretary Md Oliullah, former RAJUK member Nurul Islam and incumbent Director Kamrul Islam were sentenced to five years each.
The court fined 14 convicts, including Hasina and Tulip, Tk2 lakh each, and in failure to pay the fine, they will have to serve one more year in jail.
It also fined the remaining convicts, including Azmina and Bobby, Tk1 lakh each, and in default, they will have to remain in jail for six more months.
Meanwhile, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Prosecutor Torikul Islam expressed dissatisfaction over the verdicts, saying, “We did not get the verdicts we had expected, as we had sought the maximum punishment for the accused under Section 409 of the Penal Code, which is life imprisonment.”
He also said they will decide the next course of action after discussion with the ACC.
According to the prosecution, Bobby and Azmina obtained separate 10-katha plots in the Purbachal New Town Project despite already owning a house, flat or housing facilities in Dhaka. It was further alleged that Tulip influenced her aunt Hasina, and that Hasina abused her power to facilitate the allotment of plots.
