Mezbaur Rahman Sumon’s second feature film, “Roid”, has been selected for the 57th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), alongside several films showcased at Cannes and Venice. The film will compete in the section dedicated to debut and second features by emerging filmmakers from around the world. The organisers announced the selection on Monday.
The festival will take place in Goa, India, from 20 to 28 November.
Drawing inspiration from stories he heard from his mother during childhood, a couple he observed in real life and a centuries-old folk narrative, Sumon has crafted “Roid” around Sadhu, his mentally unstable wife and a nearby palm tree. Mostafizur Noor Imran plays Sadhu, while Nazifa Tushi portrays his wife. Following “Hawa”, this marks Tushi’s second collaboration with Sumon.
Earlier, ‘Roid’ was selected for the Tiger Competition section of the 55th International Film Festival Rotterdam.
The story of “Roid” was jointly written by Sumon and Selina Banu Moni. Sumon, Zahin Faruk Amin, Siddik Ahmed and Sukorno Shahed Dhiman collaborated on the screenplay.
Set against a rural backdrop, the 127-minute film is jointly produced by Facecard Production and streaming platform Bongo.
