Theatre troupe Prangonemor is set to bring back its acclaimed production “Obhineta” (The Actor) to the stage after nearly two and a half years, featuring a fresh concept and presentation.
The play will be staged at the Nilima Ibrahim Auditorium of Bangladesh Mahila Samity on Bailey Road in the capital on 31 October.
Written by Ananta Hira and directed by Nuna Afroze, the production features performances by Ananta Hira, Nuna Afroze and Sabuktogin Shuvo.
Inspired by poet Jibanananda Das’s famous observation that not everyone is a poet, the play explores the idea that while everyone may be an actor, only a few become true artistes.
“Obhineta” portrays an actor not merely as an entertainer but as a committed artiste and cultural warrior who stands against injustice, oppression, religious fanaticism, superstition and social discrimination.
Although rooted in Bangladesh, the central character represents the struggles of deprived and oppressed people worldwide. The production also highlights theatre’s enduring role in challenging corruption, inhumanity and social wrongdoing.
“Obhineta” marks Nuna Afroze’s sixth directorial venture for Prangonemor. Her previous productions include “Swadeshi”, “Raktokorobi”, “Shesher Kabita”, “Ami O Rabindranath” and “Krishnachurar Din”.
Besides directing, Nuna Afroze has designed the costumes. Thandu Raihan is responsible for lighting, Neel Kamrul for music, Charu Pintu for poster design, Prakriti Sikder for choreography and Mohammad Ali Babul for makeup.
