The Department of Theatre at Tagore University of Creative Arts (TUCA) is set to stage “Animal Farm”, based on George Orwell’s novel, at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on 26 and 27 October. Both performances will begin at 7pm.
The production is directed by Dr Sydur Rahman Lipon, theatre director, researcher and academic, while the stage adaptation has been written by Nazrul Syed.
George Orwell’s Animal Farm remains one of the most influential works of political allegory in world literature. Although rooted in the Russian Revolution and the political developments that followed in the Soviet Union, the novel addresses universal questions of power, oppression and the betrayal of revolutionary ideals. Its portrayal of political manipulation, historical distortion and the abuse of authority continues to resonate with contemporary societies.
The novel’s famous line, “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others,” captures the central contradiction of a revolution that ultimately gives rise to a new form of tyranny.
Talking about the production, director Dr Sydur Rahman Lipon said, “Animal Farm is not merely a story about animals on a farm; it reflects the structures of power within our society and the state. History has repeatedly shown us how people have fought revolutions in pursuit of freedom. Yet, in many instances, although those in power have changed, the structures of oppression have remained. Orwell’s novel confronts us with this reality.”
Students from different semesters of Theatre Department the university are performing in the production. Dr Shameem Ahmed and Abdur Razzak serve as associate directors, with Abdur Razzaq also responsible for set and props design. Costume design is by Mohsina Akhter, lighting design by Dhiman Chandra Barman, and music direction by Dr. Ashim Kumar Natta. Choreography is by Amit Chowdhury and SM Hasan Ishtiaque, while the masks have been designed and crafted by Shohayel Rahman Ujan. The production was previously staged on 4 August 2025, at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy as part of the July Punarjagaran Natyotsab 2025.
