The Department of Theatre at Tagore University of Creative Arts (TUCA) will stage Animal Farm, adapted from George Orwell’s novel, at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on 26 and 27 October. Both performances will begin at 7:00pm.
Directed by theatre director, researcher and academic Sydur Rahman Lipon, the production features a stage adaptation by Nazrul Syed.
The information was confirmed in a press release issued on
Thursday and signed by Md Monirul Islam Rintu, registrar of Tagore University
of Creative Arts.
Orwell’s Animal Farm is one of the most influential
political allegories in world literature. Drawing on the Russian Revolution and
the subsequent political developments in the Soviet Union, the novel explores
power, oppression and the betrayal of revolutionary ideals.
Its portrayal of political manipulation, distortion of
history and abuse of authority continues to resonate with contemporary
societies.
The novel’s famous line, “All animals are equal, but some
animals are more equal than others,” highlights how a revolution intended to
establish equality can ultimately give rise to a new form of tyranny.
Speaking about the production, director Sydur Rahman
Lipon said the play reflects the structures of power within society and the
state.
“Animal Farm is not merely a story about animals on a farm;
it reflects the structures of power within our society and the state. History
has repeatedly shown us how people have fought revolutions in pursuit of
freedom. Yet, in many instances, although those in power have changed, the
structures of oppression have remained. Orwell’s novel confronts us with this
reality,” he said.
Students from different semesters of TUCA’s Department of
Theatre are performing in the production.
Shameem Ahmed and Abdur Razzak are serving as associate
directors, while Abdur Razzaq is also responsible for set and props design.
Mohsina Akhter has designed the costumes, Dhiman Chandra Barman the lighting,
and Ashim Kumar Natta is directing the music.
Amit Chowdhury and SM Hasan Ishtiaque are responsible for
choreography, while Shohayel Rahman Ujan has designed and crafted the masks.
