Reinventing your home: A tinge of global trends
A A

Ramadan is a month of fasting, followed by the three-day celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr, marking the end of the holy month, with special prayers, charity, festive meals, and family gatherings. Muslims, in most countries globally, tend to decorate their home during the holy month to create a joyous and spiritual atmosphere, expressing gratitude, and seeking blessings from Allah.

Streets in Egypt, Palestine and Jerusalem (before the war began) are famously and beautifully hung with lanterns. Using fancy bedsheets for the beds and decorating the dining tables with beautiful flower bouquets are some of the common ways families embellish their homes during Ramadan. Western Muslim families prefer to decorate their houses with lanterns, string lights, and Islamic calligraphy to create a festive and warm atmosphere. One of the main reasons why Western Muslim families decorate their homes is to help their children learn and understand the importance of the month, and to instil love in their hearts for the blessed month and the holy festival Eid.

Today, we are sharing some tips, inspired by the ideas collected from different Muslim cultures around the world, which you can follow to decorate your own home during the upcoming Eid.

Use string lights
Illuminate your home with indoor lights. A simple string of lights can warm and elevate any space, making them look magical at night. Use the most simple but effective method to enhance the effect -- string it up and wrap it around the surface. You can also put them inside a bottle or a jar for a more subtle and creative effect, or you can place them behind sheer curtains to diffuse the hard glow and make them look more ethereal.

Flower arrangements
You can also set up some beautiful and fresh flower arrangements. We always love having fresh flowers in our home. Place a bouquet in a vase that adds extra elegance as another decorative element. We recommend using a crystal or plain porcelain vase, as printed design can be distracting for some.

Candlelight or Arabic-style lanterns
Borrowing the idea from Middle Eastern or Egyptian traditions, decorative lanterns can create a warm, festive glow in your home, especially the living or dining area. You can either place them on tables or hang them on walls to make the space feel cosy and welcoming.
Textile accents
You can use colourful and patterned rugs, table runners, and cushions inspired by Moroccan designs to add an elegant and vibrant touch to the living area. You can create a festive but sophisticated Eid ambience by blending gold, blue, and warm reds.
Nevertheless, home décor only adds to the joy of Eid but doesn’t define the day. So, whether you can decorate your home or not, we all should enjoy our Eid day to the fullest.
