A little mindful self-care -- hydrating, cleansing and nourishing your skin and hairs in advance -- not only restores their natural vitality to be ready for a festive look but also ensures your makeover appears fresh and radiant.
Dr Howard Murad, a dermatologist and modern wellness trailblazer, said, “Healthy skin is a reflection of overall wellness.” Grooming, therefore, is essential for both men and women – it can begin right at home.
Step 1: Deep cleansing
To get a glow like Hydra Facial at home you can follow a six step deep cleansing routine. Begin with a market bought Korean oil-based cleanser to dissolve dirt and sunscreen. Korean oil-based cleansers are often mild and help to clean pores. Then follow a mild foaming face wash to clean the face thoroughly.
Next comes face steam as it helps to open clogged pores. Fill a bowl with warm water, lean over it with a towel over your head for five minutes.
Once the pores are open, it becomes easy to remove blackheads and white heads. You can use nose pore strips or metal blackhead extractors. Sanitise the metal comedone tools and gently press around your nose and chin. However, be gentle to avoid irritation and wash the face with cold water.
After extracting the impurities, apply a cleansing musk and leave it for 10-15 minutes. Aarong, unimart and several online pages sell ready-to-use cleansing masks. But if you prefer a homemade option, mix one tablespoon each of besan, red lentil powder, plain yogurt and honey. Rinse with lukewarm water, gently massaging in circular motions.
Apply a cold sheet mask or a hydrating gel/aloe mask for 10-15 minutes. This step helps restore moisture and soothe the skin.
After patting your skin dry, use a hydrating serum like hyaluronic acid, followed by a nourishing moisturiser to lock in the glow. You can also use Vitamin C serum. However, never apply lemon or other citrus fruits directly on your skin.
Step 2: Pedicure and manicure
Polished, clean nails are the ultimate sophistication – simple to achieve but stays shiny for weeks with proper care. Soak your hands and feet in lukewarm water with salt, a mild shampoo and a few drops of lemon juice to help reduce yellowness and soften the cuticles. Use a small cleansing brush to clean nails and feet properly.
Next, apply any store-bought herbal mask or a homemade pack made with multani mitti and cucumber juice on your hands and feet. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes. Once dry, rinse off with lukewarm water and pat dry.
Trim your nails in half oval or square shapes with a nail cutter and smooth the edges with a nail filer, then gently buff the surface with a nail shiner to bring out a natural shine. Even without polish, well-shaped and buffed nails look clean, healthy and radiant.
Finish with a light moisturiser to keep the skin soft and smooth.
Step 3: Hair Spa
Hair spa treatment at home can help you rejuvenate your hair without spending much in the parlour. Every day, pollutants and dust harm your hair. To do a hair spa treatment at home, you will need two to three tablespoon of olive oil or coconut oil, few drops of rosemary oil and two vitamin e capsules. Mix the oils and gently apply on you scalp and work it down to the tips of your hair. Leave the oil on for 30 minutes.
Instead of oil, you can also use a homemade hair protein musk made with five tablespoon yogurt, one egg, eight tablespoon henna powder, two table spoon fenugreek powder, three tablespoon any hair oil and a tablespoon of lemon juice. Yogurt and egg soften the hair, while the oil and fenugreek powder bring a subtle shine, and lemon helps reduce the strong smell of egg. However, if you have an itchy or sensitive scalp, do not use lemon. Leave the hair mask on for 20 minutes, then wash it off with a mild shampoo.
Conditioner and hair serum are the most important final steps. Apply a good conditioner according to your hair type. Recently, L’Oréal Paris Glycolic Gloss conditioner and serum have become popular. You can also use conditioners from TRESemmé or Mielle Organics. Apply the conditioner to the lengths only, leave it on for two to five minutes, and then rinse gently with room-temperature water.
After pat-drying your hair, apply a few drops of hair serum and blow-dry it to get a spa-like finish.
