Surge in C-section births troubling

Caesarean operation (C-section) is important only when it comes to saving the life of a mother or a child. Sometimes physicians find patients with unexpected complexities, and in such cases, they decide to take them in for a C-section. However, the World Health Organisation suggests that this rate should not exceed 10-15 per cent. Yet, the rate is around 45% to 51% in Bangladesh, much higher than WHO’s limit.

A recent study unveiled the shocking truth that C-section childbirths are increasingly taking place in Rajshahi Division, with nearly four out of every ten patients in government hospitals not choosing normal delivery. However, besides health risks, a huge amount of money is spent during a caesarean operation, which brings financial burden to a family. Some dishonest physicians also encourage patients to have C-sections only to gain financial benefits; some others do that, taking it as a “safer and faster option”. Fear of complications and lack of adequate manpower for 24-hour obstetric care are the other reasons that provoke patients’ families to agree on C-sections. And due to these, women from lower-income families are victimised the most, as their families have limited healthcare knowledge and bargaining power.

The authorities concerned, therefore, must strengthen stricter supervision of delivery decisions in both government and private hospitals. In addition, the number of midwives and proportions of antenatal care should be increased. Also, conducting awareness campaigns to encourage safe and evidence-based childbirth practices is needed. Besides, families of patients must act wisely, not emotionally, while making such important decisions.

Furthermore, it must not be forgotten that normal delivery is the most ideal birth method, whereas C-section should only be used in special circumstances. And its overuse can surely “hinder national progress towards maternal and neonatal mortality in line with the Sustainable Development Goals”.
