Following the closure of the Bhomra Land Port in Satkhira for long four months and twenty days, nearly 2,000 tons of onions have entered the country through the port in just three days.

As a result of the increased supply, the price of local onions has dropped by Tk4 to Tk7 per kg.

Ziaul Haque, a wholesale trader at Sultanpur Bazar, said that the price of local onions began to drop with Indian onions entering the market.

On Tuesday (August 19), local onions were sold at Tk65 to Tk67 per kg, while Indian onions were sold at Tk60 per kg.

Prices are expected to fall further if the supply continues to increase.

According to the Bhomra C&F Agents Association, onions are now arriving regularly after a long cessation. From Sunday to Tuesday, nearly 2,000 tons of onions arrived in the country through the Bhomra port on seveny trucks. The market will quickly become stable if imports continue.

“The market has already experienced an impact after the arrival of nearly 2,000 tons of onions in the country in just three days. The supply will increase in the days yet to come,” according to a revenue officer.
