Bangladesh has urged developed Commonwealth countries to continue offering preferential trade treatment to nations graduating from the least developed country (LDC) category to support a smooth socio-economic transition.
Acting Foreign Minister Humaiun Kobir made the call while addressing the executive session of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) at the American University of Antigua Conference Centre in St John’s on Tuesday (3 November).
Leading the Bangladesh delegation, Kobir highlighted obstacles to uninterrupted supply chains and trade among Commonwealth member states, calling for concerted efforts to realise the bloc’s substantial intra-Commonwealth trade potential.
The session brought together heads of government, foreign ministers and heads of delegation from the Commonwealth’s 56 member states.
Leaders also proposed deeper cooperation in several areas, including intra-Commonwealth trade, investment and private-sector financing; greater coherence in the international monetary, financial and trading systems; stronger climate finance partnerships; and youth skills development and entrepreneurship.
Kobir was accorded full cabinet ministerial status to lead the Bangladesh delegation and discharge the responsibilities of the foreign minister at the 28th CHOGM, being held in Antigua and Barbuda from 1 to 4 November.
