Reflecting on the changing nature of diplomacy, US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T Christensen has underscored the importance of keeping diplomatic engagement “at the speed of relevance”—responsive to emerging challenges, attentive to evolving national priorities, and focused on delivering meaningful outcomes.
The Foreign Service Academy hosted Ambassador Christensen for an interactive session with the trainee officers of the 32nd Specialized Diplomatic Training Course (SDTC) and the 4th Professional Master’s in International Relations and Diplomacy (PMIRD).
The discussion offered valuable insights into the priorities guiding U.S. engagement with Bangladesh, particularly in the areas of commercial diplomacy, trade facilitation, energy and defence cooperation, humanitarian assistance to the Rohingya, and cooperation in the health sector.
Emphasising an approach centered on trade rather than aid, the Ambassador highlighted the scope for building stronger economic partnerships and expanding opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation.
He also underscored the importance of identifying aligned national interests and ensuring that bilateral engagement delivers tangible benefits for both countries.
His reflections highlighted how contemporary diplomacy increasingly requires strategic foresight, practical problem-solving, and the ability to translate shared priorities into concrete outcomes.
The session provided the trainee officers with valuable perspectives on the evolving practice of diplomacy and the role of economic engagement and strategic partnerships in advancing national interests.
The Foreign Service Academy expressed its sincere appreciation to Ambassador Christensen for sharing his insights and engaging with the next generation of Bangladeshi diplomats.
