Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has urged the international community to step up efforts to resolve the Rohingya crisis and ensure the sustainable repatriation of forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals to their homeland.
He made the call during a meeting with Julie Isabel Bishop, the United Nations Secretary-General’s special envoy on Myanmar, at his office at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Monday.
The two discussed Myanmar’s current political and security situation, various aspects of the Rohingya crisis and efforts to repatriate the displaced people.
Salahuddin said Bangladesh had been facing a severe and prolonged crisis after providing humanitarian shelter to hundreds of thousands of forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals who fled conflict in their homeland.
He stressed the need for stronger international engagement to find a lasting and sustainable solution to the crisis.
Julie Bishop outlined the prevailing conflict in Myanmar, saying she was continuing diplomatic engagement and maintaining regular communication with relevant parties to help end the conflict and ensure civilian protection.
The meeting also highlighted concerns over landmines in border areas, human trafficking and drug smuggling, noting their regional and global implications.
Both sides underscored the importance of political dialogue and mutual cooperation in creating conditions for the safe, dignified and voluntary return of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.
