Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)
spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on Wednesday reiterated that the extradition of
ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina is a “legal matter”.
“Insofar as the extradition is concerned,
this is a legal matter. As we said before, there are legalities involved in
it,” Jaiswal said at a weekly media briefing in New Delhi.
Jaiswal’s remarks came in response to a journalist’s question about whether Bangladesh had sent India documents related to Hasina’s trial by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), which sentenced her to death, and whether such documents were required to initiate the extradition process.
The MEA spokesperson was also asked about
recent remarks by Bangladesh’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun
Kabir, who said the activities of Hasina and her party activists in India were
the main challenge to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s planned visit to New
Delhi.
“I would like to reiterate that our approach
towards Bangladesh is to have positive, constructive and forward-looking engagement
with a people-centric focus for mutual growth and prosperity. We remain focused
on this objective during our discussion with Bangladesh authorities,” Jaiswal
said.
