Parliamentary Standing Committee Chairman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Barrister Jahrat Adib Chowdhury has been elected as a member of the Executive Committee of Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) from its Asia-Pacific Group.

She was elected on Tuesday at the 153rd IPU Assembly held in Arusha, Tanzania, securing a majority of the votes, said a foreign ministry press release.

Representatives from 37 member countries of the IPU’s Asia-Pacific Group participated in the election.

The Foreign Ministry said Jahrat's election marks a significant achievement for Bangladesh under the present BNP-led government, following the country’s election to the presidency of the 81st UN General Assembly.

The election reflects the international community’s continued trust in the government’s commitment to strengthening parliamentary democracy and is expected to further enhance Bangladesh’s voice and representation in the international parliamentary arena, the press release reads.

The IPU is the global organisation of national parliaments, promoting democratic governance, peace, sustainable development, parliamentary diplomacy and cooperation.

A Bangladesh parliamentary delegation, led by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, is currently attending the 153rd IPU Assembly.
