Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi travelled to New Delhi on an unannounced visit and met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday.
The meeting took place at around 1pm local
time in Delhi, diplomatic sources told the BBC.
Diplomatic sources said Trivedi travelled to
Delhi to convey Dhaka’s current position on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s
possible visit to India and several other bilateral issues.
Trivedi arrived in Delhi on a late-night flight from Dhaka on Monday.
Neither the Indian embassy in Bangladesh, India’s Ministry of External Affairs nor the Indian Prime Minister’s Office has officially commented on the visit.
Talks between Bangladesh and India over
Tarique Rahman’s possible visit had progressed considerably earlier, but the
visit has yet to take place.
Dhaka’s longstanding request for the
extradition of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina has also remained pending in
Delhi, becoming a major source of strain in bilateral relations.
