India on Tuesday said all issues related to the sharing of the Ganges and other common rivers with Bangladesh would be discussed through the Joint Rivers Commission (JRC).
“We have a Joint Rivers Commission and all matters related to rivers will be discussed at this commission. At the same time, technical-level meetings on the Ganges treaty have continued to happen,” Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, said at a media briefing in New Delhi.
Jaiswal's remarks came amid comments by Bangladesh’s Water Resources Minister Md Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee that Dhaka wants to negotiate a new Ganges Water-Sharing Treaty with India instead of renewing the existing agreement.
The minister made the remarks at the national
dialogue “Kollolini: A River Dialogue 2026” at Aloki Convention Centre in
Dhaka on Thursday (24 Sept).
He said the new agreement should include
a guarantee clause while ensuring Bangladesh’s national interests are
protected.
