The Bangladesh Consulate General in Kunming has invited entrepreneurs from China’s Yunnan province to invest in Bangladesh, highlighting the country’s potential as a gateway connecting South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Chinese market.
The investment opportunities were presented at an Overseas Investment and Trade Environment Promotion Event held at the General Association of Yunnan Entrepreneurs in Kunming under the theme “Connect to the South, Prosper through Open Cooperation,” on Saturday.
Ridwanur Rahman, First Secretary (Commercial) at the Bangladesh Consulate General in Kunming, delivered a presentation titled “Bangladesh as an Investment Destination” at the event.
He highlighted Bangladesh’s competitive workforce, industrial land, energy facilities, nationwide electricity coverage and strategic geographical location as key advantages for international investors.
As a country connecting South Asia, Southeast Asia and China, Bangladesh offers Chinese investors an effective route to regional and international markets, he said.
Ridwanur said the proposed Kunming-Chattogram corridor could emerge as a promising trade route linking southwestern China with the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean, creating new opportunities for entrepreneurs from Yunnan.
He also highlighted Bangladesh’s investment-friendly policies, including 100% foreign ownership, repatriation of capital and profits, and bilateral investment agreements with 34 countries, including China.
The presentation also covered the Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone under construction in Anwara, Chattogram, the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority’s (BIDA) One Stop Service, export processing zones, high-tech parks and potential public-private partnership (PPP) projects worth more than $4 billion.
Potential investment sectors highlighted at the event included readymade garments, pharmaceuticals, electronics, electric vehicles, agro-processing, renewable energy, logistics and information technology services.
Ridwanur also said Chinese companies could find significant opportunities in solar power, energy storage technologies and green construction.
Following the event, Yunnan entrepreneurs held discussions with the commercial wing of the Bangladesh Consulate on expanding investment and trade with Bangladesh.
The consulate said it is working to strengthen trade and investment ties with Yunnan, Sichuan, Chongqing, Guizhou and Guangxi, with a view to creating stronger economic links between Bangladesh and southwestern China.
