The BIMSTEC Secretariat announced on Monday that the regional bloc has joined the International Telecommunication Union Development Sector (ITU-D) as a sector member, marking a significant step towards strengthening regional digital cooperation.
The ITU Council approved BIMSTEC’s membership application during its 2026 session, held from 28 April to 8 May. ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin formally conveyed the decision in a letter dated 28 May to BIMSTEC Secretary General Indra Mani Pandey, according to a press release.
The new membership will enable BIMSTEC to deepen its engagement with the ITU and enhance cooperation in information and communication technologies (ICT), artificial intelligence (AI), digital connectivity, telecommunications development and capacity building.
BIMSTEC officials said participation in the ITU Development Sector would create new opportunities for member states to benefit from the organisation’s expertise, resources, programmes and technical initiatives. The Secretariat also plans to utilise these opportunities to advance regional cooperation in ICT and AI.
The Bay of Bengal regional grouping views digital and AI technologies as key drivers of socio-economic development, innovation, connectivity and digital transformation. Officials said the partnership with the ITU would provide an important platform for promoting cooperation in emerging technologies, supporting inclusive digital development and accelerating sustainable growth across the region.
They expressed optimism that the collaboration would help BIMSTEC member states harness technological advancements more effectively and strengthen regional integration through digital transformation.
