Leaders of the Jatiya Party have urged outgoing Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma to help ensure the implementation of the long-pending Teesta water-sharing agreement and the resumption of suspended tourist visas.
The call was made on Thursday morning during
a farewell meeting with Pranay Verma at the Indian High Commission in the
capital’s Baridhara.
Anisul Islam Mahmud, Chairman of the Jatiya
Party and a former foreign minister, made the request during the courtesy
meeting.
Among others present were ABM Ruhul Amin
Howlader, secretary general of the party and a former minister; Mujibul Haque
Chunnu, executive chairman of the party and a former state minister; and Masrur
Maula, presidium member and special envoy on international affairs to the party
chairman.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, ABM
Ruhul Amin Howlader said the Jatiya Party congratulated Pranay Verma for
discharging his duties successfully in Bangladesh over a long period.
He said the two sides discussed a range of
issues concerning the interests of both Bangladesh and India, with particular
emphasis on strengthening people-to-people ties.
The Jatiya Party leaders also stressed the
need for taking necessary steps to expand trade and commerce between the two
neighbouring countries.
