Foysol Choudhury, a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP), has congratulated Tarique Rahman on being elected as the prime minister of Bangladesh.

In a letter sent to the BNP chairman, Foysol also said he looks forward to to strenghthening Scotland-Bangladesh ties in the areas of trade, investment and climate cooperation during Tarique's tenure.

Notably, Foysol is also the founder and convenor of the Cross-Party Group (CPG) on Bangladesh at the Scottish Parliament.

In the letter, he wrote: "I am confident that, with the mandate you have secured, your Government will work to promote stability, strengthen democratic institutions, and advance good governance in the interests of the People of Bangladesh.

"In an increasingly complex global environment, Bangladesh’s strategic position in the region remains of considerable importance. I trust that under your leadership, the country will continue to enhance its international partnerships, attract investment, and contribute constructively to regional and global cooperation.

"Since my election in 2021 as the first Bangladeshi-born Member of the Scottish Parliament and the first British- Bangladeshi male parliamentarian in the UK, I have had the privilege of working closely with the Bangladeshi diaspora across Scotland and across the UK. I have supported numerous parliamentary initiatives celebrating Bangladesh’s rich history and cultural heritage, while fostering deeper understanding and strengthening the bonds between Scotland and Bangladesh.

"In early 2022, I had the honour of establishing the Cross-Party Group (CPG) on Bangladesh, which I convene, with the Bangladesh High Commission acting as the Secretariat.

:The CPG aims to foster mutual understanding between Scotland and Bangladesh on cultural, social, academic, political, and economic matters. It also seeks to promote the interests of both Scotland and Bangladesh, and to represent the people and organisations with Bangladeshi backgrounds living and working in Scotland.

"Scotland and Bangladesh enjoy historic relations deeply rooted in our shared values of democracy, secularism, tolerance and inclusion, and our shared aspirations for a vibrant trade, investment and climate cooperation. I look forward to seeing these important relationships further strengthened under your leadership.

"Once again, please accept my sincere congratulations and my very best wishes for a successful and productive term in office."
