The Embassy of Bangladesh, Tokyo observed Shaheed Dibash (Martyrs’ Day) and International Mother Language Day on Saturday with due respect and solemnity.
During the event, the significance of the Bengali
language and culture was highlighted among foreign friends in Japan and members
of the Bangladeshi diaspora, while upholding the ideals of “Amar Ekushey,”
according to a press release.
The day’s programme began in the early hours with
the laying of wreaths at the permanent Shaheed Minar located at Ikebukuro
Nishiguchi Park.
Ambassador Md Daud Ali paid tribute to the language
martyrs by placing a floral wreath, accompanied by embassy officials and
representatives from Toshima City.
Various political, social, and cultural
organizations of the Bangladeshi diaspora, along with community members, later
joined a Probhat Feri (morning procession) to offer their homage.
Later in the morning, at the embassy premises, Daud
Ali hoisted the national flag at half-mast in observance of the day, in the
presence of all officers and staff.
In the afternoon, a commemorative programme was held
at the embassy auditorium. The event began with prayers for the departed souls
of the language martyrs. Messages from the president, the prime minister, the
foreign minister, and the state minister for foreign affairs were read out.
A discussion followed, focusing on the historical
significance of Amar Ekushey and the global importance of International Mother
Language Day.
In his remarks, Daud Ali said the Language Movement
of 1952 laid the foundation of Bangladeshi nationalism and is now globally
recognised as International Mother Language Day, inspiring communities
worldwide to preserve their languages and cultures.
The programme concluded with a special prayer (Dua
and Munajat) for the continued peace and prosperity of the country and the
nation. An Iftar Mahfil was later hosted in honour of members of civil society
and the Bangladeshi diaspora community.
