The Ambassador of Switzerland to Bangladesh, Reto Renggli, visited the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka on International Mother Language Day to pay homage to the martyrs of the Bengali Language Movement.
During the visit, the ambassador expressed respect
for the historic sacrifices made in defence of the mother tongue, according to
a statement.
Reflecting on Switzerland’s own multilingual
heritage, he noted that coming from a country with four national languages,
Switzerland understands how language shapes identity and reflects diversity
within a nation.
The embassy also reaffirmed its support for linguistic
diversity and emphasised the importance of protecting everyone’s right to speak
their own language.
