The Bangladesh Embassy in Kathmandu observed the death anniversary of legendary mystic philosopher, humanist and Baul singer Fakir Lalon Shah on Saturday, highlighting his enduring contributions to Bengali culture, literature and the universal values of humanity, equality and social harmony.
Members of the Bangladeshi community in Kathmandu, Nepali literary figures, youth leaders, civil society representatives and former Nepali diplomats who had served in Dhaka attended the event, said a press release.
In his closing remarks, Bangladesh Ambassador to Nepal Md Shafiqur Rahman highlighted the significance of Lalon Shah’s timeless philosophy, describing it as a foundational pillar of Bengali culture and identity.
He said Lalon’s songs transcended the geographical and religious boundaries of his time, challenged prevailing social and cultural prejudices, and promoted the ideals of humanism, equality and harmony.
Reflecting on the cultural and people-to-people ties between Bangladesh and Nepal, the ambassador noted that both countries draw strength from their rich cultural heritage and longstanding traditions of harmony and peaceful coexistence.
He emphasised that cultural exchanges play a vital role in fostering mutual understanding, promoting respect for diversity and further strengthening the bonds of friendship between the two nations.
As part of the programme, Bangladeshi singers performed Lalon Geeti, while poems by Lalon were recited. The performances offered guests a glimpse into Bangladesh’s rich spiritual and cultural heritage.
A documentary highlighting Lalon Shah’s life, philosophy and remarkable contributions to Bengali society, culture and literature was also screened during the event.
