Indian Border Security Force (BSF) personnel shot and killed a Bangladeshi national at the Patgram border in Lalmonirhat on Wednesday before taking his body into their custody.
The deceased, Ali Hossain, 49, was the son of the late Abdul Gafur from East Paniartari village in Dhabalguri, Patgram.
According to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and local sources, residents heard gunshots in two phases at approximately 2:50am and 4:50am. BSF claimed they fired "precautionary" shots when 7-8 Bangladeshis allegedly tried to cut the barbed-wire fence to enter India. Ali Hossain sustained bullet wounds during a reported scuffle. BSF took him to an Indian hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Lt Col Syed Fazle Munim, Commanding Officer of Teesta Battalion-61 BGB, said authorities are preparing for a flag meeting at both battalion and sector commander levels. He stated that BGB will lodge a strong protest against the killing and demand the immediate return of the body.
The incident has sparked tension and grief throughout the border area.
