Import and export activities at Bhomra Land Port in Satkhira have been suspended for Sunday (8 November) as traders in neighbouring India observe Kali Puja, a major religious festival of the Hindu community.
The decision follows a letter from India's Ghojadanga C&F Agents' Welfare Association informing Bhomra Customs House and the Bhomra C&F Agents Association that all cargo-related activities would remain closed on the day.
Bhomra Customs House Commissioner Mushfiqur Rahman said other official activities at the customs house would continue as usual, while passengers holding passports would be allowed to cross the border.
He said there was no government holiday in Bangladesh for Kali Puja, but traders and C&F agents at India's Ghojadanga port had decided to suspend import and export activities for the day. Bhomra C&F agents subsequently agreed to follow the decision.
Abu Musa, general secretary of the Bhomra C&F Agents Association, confirmed the suspension to the Daily Sun.
He said Mihir Ghosh, general secretary of the Ghojadanga C&F Agents (Cargo Welfare) Association, informed them through a signed letter that the Indian association had decided to suspend all import and export activities on Sunday in observance of Kali Puja.
Following discussions, leaders of the Bhomra C&F Agents Association also agreed to suspend cargo-related activities for the day.
Normal import and export operations at the port are expected to resume on Monday, Abu Musa said.
