Bangladesh and Russia will seek to deepen economic ties, expand bilateral trade and attract investment as senior officials and business representatives from the two countries meet in Dhaka on Thursday for a two-day intergovernmental commission meeting.

The fifth meeting of the Russia-Bangladesh Intergovernmental Commission (IGC) on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation will be held on 5-6 November, bringing together senior government officials and business representatives from both countries.

According to a statement issued by the Russian Embassy in Dhaka on Tuesday, the Russian delegation will be led by Ilya Shestakov, head of the Federal Agency for Fisheries and chairperson of the Russian side of the commission.

Senior officials from Russia’s ministries of Energy, Economic Development and Education, along with representatives of other government agencies and business organisations, will also attend the meeting.

The discussions will cover a wide range of bilateral economic issues, with particular focus on expanding trade, strengthening financial and banking cooperation, enhancing energy partnerships and exploring opportunities in education and information and communication technology (ICT).

The two sides are also expected to discuss ways to deepen economic engagement and facilitate greater interaction between businesses.

On the sidelines of the meeting, the newly established Russia-Bangladesh Business Council and the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) will hold business consultations to explore potential partnerships, investment opportunities and ways to expand bilateral trade.

Established in 2017, the IGC serves as an institutional mechanism for promoting cooperation between the two countries in trade, economic development, science and technology.
