The website of state-owned Janata Bank has shown signs of cyberattacks despite being taken offline as a precautionary measure over cybersecurity risks, and remained inaccessible until 1:30pm on Sunday.
Officials concerned said they had detected multiple signs of attacks on the website and were working to address the issue.
When the website was accessed at around 1:30pm on Sunday, it displayed a notice saying the system was under maintenance and that work was underway on the application. It added that the service would be restored soon and apologised for the temporary inconvenience.
A senior official of Janata Bank’s IT department told a media outlet that two signs of attacks had been detected on the website.
“It is taking some time to fix the issues. We hope to restore the website by today,” the official said.
Meanwhile, the website, which had also been taken offline as a precaution against cyber threats, resumed operations on Sunday morning.
The central bank website had remained shut since Thursday and was reopened at 8:00am on Sunday. Bangladesh Bank said it had restored access considering that Sunday was a working day and that the website could be monitored round the clock.
The precautionary measures came after two serious security vulnerabilities were identified in PHP, one of the world’s most widely used programming languages.
The European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) and relevant agencies issued warnings over potential cyberattack risks following the discovery of the vulnerabilities.
The vulnerabilities have raised concerns that attackers could exploit affected systems, prompting organisations using PHP-based websites to review their security measures and take precautionary steps.
