TIN to become mandatory for opening and maintaining bank accounts
A A

The government is set to make the Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) mandatory not only for opening new bank accounts but also for keeping existing accounts active, as part of its efforts to expand the country’s tax net.

According to sources at the National Board of Revenue (NBR), the proposed measure aims to bring more individuals under the tax system and improve tax compliance.

However, exemptions may be granted to students, recipients of government allowances, and individuals and institutions that have been granted tax exemptions through official gazette notifications.

Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury is expected to announce the proposal in the upcoming national budget FY2026-27.

At present, a significant number of bank account holders in Bangladesh do not possess a TIN. While account holders without a TIN are currently subject to a higher rate of withholding tax on interest earned from bank deposits, obtaining a TIN has not been mandatory for maintaining a bank account.
