Artificial intelligence (AI) could emerge as a new driver of Bangladesh’s economic growth, opening opportunities across key industries, but realising its potential will require stronger digital infrastructure, skilled manpower and increased investment in technology, business and technology leaders said on Saturday.
At a seminar in Dhaka, policymakers and industry leaders highlighted the growing scope for AI applications in financial services, telecommunications, e-commerce and other sectors, stressing the need for closer collaboration among the government, businesses and academic institutions.
The American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham) organised the seminar titled “From Digital Infrastructure to AI Economy: Building Bangladesh’s Next Growth Engine” at the Crystal Ballroom of InterContinental Dhaka.
Md Anwar Hossain, secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology, attended the event as the chief guest.
Discussions centred on how Bangladesh could move beyond basic digitalisation and harness AI to improve productivity, enhance business efficiency, create new economic opportunities and attract technology investment.
Speakers emphasised that wider AI adoption would depend on reliable digital connectivity, stronger technological capabilities and a workforce equipped with relevant skills. They also called for an innovation-friendly environment that ensures the responsible use of emerging technologies.
Rubaba Dowla, country managing director for Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan at Oracle, moderated the panel discussion.
The panellists included Yasir Azman, CEO of Grameenphone; Sabbir Ahmed, country manager of Visa for Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan; Ataur Rahim Chowdhury, co-founder and CEO of ShopUp; and Prof Dr Md Abdur Razzaque, professor and chairman of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Dhaka.
AmCham’s ICT Subcommittee organised the seminar as part of the 30th US Trade Show 2026, jointly sponsored by AmCham and the US Embassy in Dhaka.
Held from 5 to 7 November at InterContinental Dhaka, the three-day trade show showcased American products, services and innovations, while providing a platform to strengthen trade, investment and business ties between Bangladesh and the US.
